Monthly
Meeting
Thursday, September 16th at 6:30pm at
the 83rd
Street side of Tudor Park. Remember bring a neighbor...and a chair!
Please Note: Rain Dates for our park
meetings will be held on the
following day it does not rain.
Only
1 more meeting to be held at Tudor Park. October begins our indoor meetings at
Divine Mercy Academy (Nativity BVM) located at 92 St. and Rockaway Blvd. While
other civic associations take the summer off, your civic association not only
meets with residents about their concerns, but brings those concerns to
Commanding Officer Joseph Courtesis at the 106th Precinct. So please help us
help you by attending our meetings all year round.
MEMORANDUM
FROM COMMUNITY BOARD 10: As you all know by now, on August 3rd, 2010 State
Lottery recommended the selection of Genting to be the VLT franchisee for
Aqueduct. But nothing is “etched in stone” yet. There are a few more steps in
the process. To approve a contract award to Genting, signatures of the Governor,
the Temporary President of the Senate, and the Speaker of the Assembly must be
added to the MOU already signed by Genting. Following those signatures, the form
of the MOU must be approved by the Attorney General, and the MOU must be
approved by the Comptroller and filed in his office. Thereafter, the signed and
approved MOU will be delivered to Genting, and Genting will pay the upfront
licensing fee of $380 million to the State within ten business days.
Construction of the Aqueduct video lottery casino will commence as soon as
practicable after approval of the MOU and payment of the licensing fee, with the
opening of the preliminary phase to be expected within six months after MOU
approval.
PARK PROJECTS: You may or may not notice that some interior work is being done at
our Joseph P. Addabbo Playground and the handball courts are being refurbished.
Additional fencing and gates are also being installed.
PREPAREDNESS
FACTS - WHAT TO DO DURING A HEATWAVE: You should listen to a NOAA Weather
Radio for critical updates from the National Weather Service (NWS). Never leave
children or pets alone in enclosed vehicles. Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of
fluids even if you do not feel thirsty. Avoid drinks with caffeine or alcohol.
East small meals and eat more often. Avoid extreme temperature changes. Wear
loose-fitting lightweight light-colored clothing. Avoid dark colors because they
absorb the sun’s rays. Slow down, stay indoors and avoid strenuous exercise
during the hottest part of the day. Postpone outdoor games and activities. Use a
buddy system when working in excessive heat. Take frequent breaks if you must
work outdoors. Check on family, friends and neighbors who do not have air
conditioning, who spend much of their time alone or who are more likely to be
affected by the heat. Also check on your animals frequently to ensure that they
are not suffering from the heat.
IN MY
OPINION: I have recently been given a piece of legislation proposed by
Council Member Eric Ulrich on noise. Although there have been improvements on
the decibel levels, there will be an increase in the fines that people receive.
The piece of legislation does not come close to what I believe is needed to
control some of the outrageous parties that go on this precinct. With each
precinct in this city having only one sound meter per precinct at a cost of
approximately $7,000 per sound meter, there is no way the precincts can cover
all sound complaints within each 8 hour shift.
Dues Collection: Yes, we are still
out there collecting dues. If you haven’t seen us yet, please be patient, as we
will get to all houses in Tudor Village. The response has been great so far and
our goal is to get 100% membership. It’s been done before and can be done again.
This is all for you, our residents, in keeping Tudor Village a nice quiet,
crimeless place to live.
An open letter on Street Parking was
found posted on a pole in Tudor Village and we assume that it is from a Tudor
Village resident. We would have put this open letter in this month’s newsletter,
but were unable to do so without knowing who wrote it. If that person would like
us to include it in our next month’s newsletter, they need to contact Frank at
(718) 843-2329 and give him their name and address. If you wish that your
personal information be withheld from our newsletter, we will gladly keep you
anonymous.
COMMUNITY
DRIVEWAYS: As we have stated in the past, there are (2) community
driveways in Tudor Village; (1) between 85th & 86th Streets and the other
between 86th & 87th Streets. These driveways are for the sole purpose of
entering and exiting our properties. Children playing in the community
driveway is a disaster ready to happen. For the safety of everyone, please
do not use them as such.
Special thanks go out to all our
neighbors who help to make our malls look really great. Cleaning and planting
was done this spring, so all summer long we can enjoy the beauty that makes
Tudor Village so great. Please do your part in keeping Tudor Village clean.
Please pick-up any trash that may be in front of your home. And please be
mindful of our neighbors’ properties. Curb your dog while walking around Tudor
Village.
Most of us like the warmer months
better than the winter ones. So do the “bad guys”. Criminals love the summer
season because people go out more for walks, visit friends and family, and take
vacations. While we are out and about, our homes and cars are sometimes left
unprotected. We sometimes are in our yards and forget the front door may be
open. The car window may have been open while we were in it and we may neglect
to close them when we park at home, especially if we’re going out again and
don’t want the car to be an oven when we get back in it. Most crimes are
preventable. We can prevent a great deal of crime by taking common sense
precautions when we’re out working, shopping, dining or traveling. Make plans to
not be a victim this summer. Be aware of your surroundings at all times and be
alert to anything out of the ordinary.
Don’t be timid; report anything you feel is suspicious to the police.
USED COMPUTERS NEEDED:
Buying a new computer this year and would like to donate your old equipment
to the civic?? We are looking for 2 used computers (not too old) for our
friends in the park house. Please call Frank at (718) 843-2329.
JUST A REMINDER TO BE MINDFUL OF OUR
NEIGHBORS AND NEIGHBORS PROPERTIES. PLEASE CURB YOUR DOG WHILE WALKING
AROUND TUDOR VILLAGE.
Rain Barrel
Giveaway Program: Rain barrels capture storm water from your roof and
store it for future use, such as watering your lawn or garden. They connect
directly to an existing downspout, so that as soon as the barrel is full,
the excess storm water drains normally to the city's sewer system. Our
community was selected to participate in the Rain Barrel Giveaway Program, a
free BMP pilot to help DEP determine the effectiveness of rain barrels in
New York City. If you are a single- family or attached two-family homeowner
and would like to participate in this pilot, DEP will provide you with the
tools and training to install and use a rain barrel. To perform their
analysis, DEP will contact you periodically to discuss how the rain barrel
is working. This is a key part of DEP's broader citywide effort to better
manage storm water using a variety of innovative, sustainable techniques
known as best management practices, or BMPs. Please call 311 for more
information and to participate, or visit the DEP's website at
www.nyc.gov/dep or email
rainbarrel@depnyc.gov
The city
has begun a program to replace water meters in residences. In some cases
this will necessitate DEP to gain entry into a home. PLEASE BE AWARE AREAS
IN OUR PRECINCT ARE CURRENTLY BEING DONE BY DEP CONTRACTORS. When our area
is scheduled, we will let you know.
DOES THIS
BUG YOU??? BECAUSE IT SURE BUGS ME……..
Every Sunday evening, we pack up our garbage and recycle products, and every
Monday morning we walk out of our homes to find our recycle plastic and
metal covers on the ground, our clear bags ripped open and garbage lying on
the curb.
It is obvious that we have bottle collectors rummaging through our pails and
bags during the night. If this bothers you as much as it bothers us, we have
(2) choices. First, we can bring back the bottles and cans to the stores
ourselves and collect the deposit or, we can be smart and rip off the labels
before placing them in the cans and bags. By doing this every week, we may
be able to stop the bottle collectors from making a mess of our garbage.
Let’s all give it a try!
GRAFFITI
has plagued not only this city, but countries all around the world.
There are limited amounts in Tudor Village, but yet in our eyes, there is
way too much. Please take 5 minutes out of your day to call 311 and report
any graffiti that you see on your block, your home, a mailbox, street sign,
light pole, fire hydrant, etc. It will certainly make your board members
lives easier and your street prettier. Thank you in advance for your help.
